DEC. 11, 2013 ... Last night, Tonia Johnson, a Guest House Aftercare Program client, graduated from Computer CORE's six-month job-training and job-readiness program.

The Alexandria-based program teaches students how to use Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint; how to send email; and how to navigate the Internet. Students also participate in a Success Strategies program, where they learn to create a resume and cover letter, practice interviewing for a job and learn how to conduct a job search.

Computer CORE's website notes: "Unemployment in the DC metro area ranged from 4.9% and 6.6% in 2010." For ex-offender women, the odds are much greater. "We took a survery of our graduates and found that, even with those discouraging figures, CORE grads had launched new careers, grown in their jobs and continued learning."

Congratulations to Tonia for her hard work and persistence! Gaining marketable skills and employment are among the most difficult, yet most important, steps along the road to successful re-entry.
