2026 Art Show – “Seen”

Seen: An Evening of Art, Community, and Second Chances

April 22, 2025 | Principle Gallery, Old Town Alexandria

On the evening of April 22, the rooms of the Principle Gallery in Old Town Alexandria filled with something more than art. They filled with love. Staff, residents, alumnae, volunteers, board members, and community supporters gathered together for “Seen,” Friends of Guest House’s annual Art Show, an evening that was, in every sense, a celebration of the women at the heart of our mission.

The works on display were created by Guest House residents, staff, and alumnae through our ongoing art therapy program. Art therapy gives residents a structured, supported space to process trauma, build self-awareness, and find their voice, often for the first time. According to the American Art Therapy Association, the creative process helps clients “explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions… reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem.” For women who have experienced incarceration (a population in which an estimated 90 percent have histories of trauma), that kind of healing is not a luxury. It is essential.

A Room Full of Supporters

What made the evening of “Seen” so powerful was not only the art itself, but the community surrounding it. The gallery was filled with the people who make the work of Guest House possible: residents who summoned courage to put their stories on canvas; alumnae who returned to cheer them on; board members and staff who dedicate themselves every day to the mission; volunteers who show up with open hearts; and community members who believe, as we do, that a woman’s past does not define her future.

The theme “Seen” carries special weight for the women of Guest House. For many who have navigated the criminal justice system, invisibility is a familiar experience. To stand in a gallery, their work on the wall, their community beside them, is an act of reclamation. It says: I am here. I have something to offer. I am more than my record.

Thank You

We are deeply grateful to Principle Gallery for their continued partnership and generous hospitality, and to every person who attended, donated, volunteered, or spread the word. A special thank you to our residents, whose willingness to be seen, truly seen, is the most courageous act of all.
